Every year Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo promotes the Young curators residency programme. The project aims to develop young curators’ intellectual and professional capabilities. The programme could be initially considered as an experimental workshop for young curators, however the contact between international professionals and young Italian artists resolves into the creation of a network aimed to indirectly spread the awareness of the Italian artistic scene. Structured as a semi-autonomous didactical activity, through a series of a formational courses and part-time supporting activities, the residency functions as trade union between the conclusion of an educational career and the entrance into the professional world.
Every year three young foreign curators are invited to Italy in order to organize an exhibition. Participants are selected among the best international schools for curators such as the Royal College of Art – Curating Contemporary Art MA (London); Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies (New York); Curatorial Training Programme De Appel (Amsterdam); Konstfack Academy (Stokholm); Independent Study Program Withney Museum (New York); Goldsmith’s College (London); California College of the Art – MA in Curatorial Practice (San Francisco) and Ecole du Magasin (Grenoble). As a first selection, participants are chosen after directors’ recommendation, vision of resumes, description of previous projects and published or recently drafted articles. Ultimately, an international jury selects the final three participants after individual interviews.
The residency lasts four months and culminates with an exhibition of Italian artists at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. The young curators residency programme aims to favour the research of the Italian artistic scene. Previously to the preparation of the exhibition, curators will meet with the artists and art gallerists, will be able to study bibliographical material and visit the major museums as well as private collections in Milan, Venice, Rome, Bologna, Naples and Palermo. The programme also includes a rich agenda of intensive seminars and periodical individual tutoring.
